1858 Remington Texas Army cal. .44 Engraved, a six-shot, percussion-fired, black powder revolver loaded from the muzzle, featuring a closed, engraved brass frame. Manufactured in two calibers: .36 Navy Model for maritime use and .44 Army Model for military applications.

The Remington 1858 was among the first revolvers designed with a closed frame. The barrel was threaded directly into the frame. The weapon allowed for quick swapping of an empty cylinder with a pre-loaded one. The cylinder is round with rectangular notches for the cylinder stop.

Construction — brass frame adorned with era-authentic floral engravings, polished brass finish. Grip panels made of walnut wood. Trigger guard crafted from brass.

The single-action trigger mechanism offers two positions: half-cock for placing percussion caps onto nipples, and full-cock for firing.

Equipped with a hinged under-barrel loading lever (rammer) used to press lead balls into the cylinder chambers.

Remington 1858 New Model Army .44 was manufactured between 1863 and 1875, with an estimated 122,000 units produced. It was one of the first revolvers in the world to feature a fully enclosed frame (a one-piece design that enclosed the cylinder), which made it significantly more durable and reliable than its contemporaries, such as Colt’s open-frame revolvers. The closed frame also provided enhanced structural rigidity. Another advantage was the ease of removing and replacing the entire cylinder with a loaded one.

The Remington Model 1858 was the favorite sidearm of William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody. A personal example of this revolver, once owned by Bill himself, is on display at Remington Arms Company headquarters, along with a handwritten note that reads: “This old Remington revolver I have carried and used for many years in Indian wars and buffalo hunting. It never failed me.” It’s worth noting that Buffalo Bill remained loyal to his revolver even after more modern cartridge revolvers emerged, likely due to its impressive accuracy and stopping power. Depending on the amount and quality of black powder used, bullets fired from the 1858 Remington could reach muzzle velocities between 168 and over 393 meters per second. For comparison, the muzzle velocity of a P-64 pistol round is 305 m/s.

For over 50 years, Pietta Firearms has been producing replicas of 19th-century revolvers. Thanks to the craftsmanship of skilled Italian artisans, it’s possible to own a firearm featured in classic Hollywood productions such as *Giant*, *Pale Rider*, *The Good, the Bad and the Ugly*, and *Gone with the Wind*. The build quality is exceptional—components fit together perfectly with no rattling, gaps, or unnecessary play. Some online sources note that Pietta’s replicas feature slightly enlarged grips compared to the original Remington, to better suit the hands of modern-day users.
