Black powder is produced in 4 levels of granulation. The degree of granulation is marked with the letter F:
- 1F (FG) - powder with the largest grains, used for large-caliber weapons or gun replicas.
- 2F (FFG) - For use with .45 caliber or greater guns.
- 3F (FFFG) - the most popular type of gunpowder, used for revolvers and shotguns up to .45 caliber.
- 4F (FFFFG) - finest grain size, used in guns with a caliber of .31 or less.
